Kitchari - a recipe that can be modified for all three doshas and the seasons

Thermos Flask Lunch

We are really enjoying the Thermos lunch, brought to us through our teacher Matthew at Rennaisance Yoga and Ayurveda in Toronto.

Before be we're soaking rice and beans. In the morning we chop vegetables, heat some oil in a pot and then saute some spices. We add the soaked and drained rice and beans to the spiced oil and toss them. Next we toss the vegetables. Finally the water is added. After boiling for only minutes we transfer this to the thermos. Hours later when we're getting tempted to hit a drive-thru or grab a snack, we reach for the thermos. Hot, freshly cooked lunch is served.

Freshly cooked food is MUCH healthier for you then leftovers of any kind. Cold leftovers straight from the fridge would be the worst possible choice. Instead we have created the choice to eat freshly cooked, healing, cleansing kitchari every lunch and dinner.

Life is Good.

Herbal Moisturizer

Ayurveda, surely is a lifestyle.

Today I made moisturizer. It was such an event.

First the herbs were boiled down into a thick decoction. Then strained.

I added the mixture to melted coconut oil and ghee, which I had made earlier.

Hours later the whole pot had boiled down sufficiently, only the infused oil remained.

I changed pots and added the wax which I had shaved. I whisked this mixture.

Taking it off the stove I again changed to a cool clean pot. I continued whisking.

When I finally saw the mixture thickening I transfered it to the two clean jars and added an essential oil blend. I continued to stir for some time after and only placed the lid on when the moisturizer was cool to prevent the build-up of humidity and resulting spoilage.

Ayurveda for me is a lifestyle.

It takes time in the kitchen. But I don't run to the store to buy much any more. And there are less things to recycle or dispose of. Less Garbage.

That may not be Ayurveda according to any textbook. But that is Ayurveda to me.
